The Pride Parade was held in Auckland on Saturday the 16th of February. Guggemusik played on the side of Ponsonby road contributing to the awesome atmosphere. The parade was held mid afternoon to attract a broader audience including children, youth and elders. The parade showcased the different perspectives, cultural dimensions and many colours that represent the community. Thousands of people lined the streets to enjoy the fun and watch the parade.
The Kowhai Festival was on in Warkworth on October 6 2012. The day was an absolute stunner, beautiful weather and the crowds were enjoying the music, food, wine and craft stalls. We played a number of times throughout the day making our way up and down the street. Dressed in a mixture of costumes the band was a hit. There were people dancing in the middle of the band while we played and big smiles on the faces of children, which encouraged us to play even louder!
The band played outside Eden Park to welcome rugby fans to the All Blacks vs Ireland rugby test on June 9 2012. The band was dressed in a mixture of Kiwi costumes to support the All Blacks and Green Irish ensembles to support Ireland. The Irish crowd were excited when we played “Tipperary” dancing around in front of the band and singing along. The band had an awesome time and thanks to Eden park for the fabulous free tickets where we watched the All Blacks play brilliantly!
We’re always on the lookout for new members. Do you play an instrument, or did you used to play and instrument? Dust the cobwebs off, and come along and see what we’re all about. A keen sense of adventure is recommended!
In February we went to Switzerland for Fasnacht the Swiss Carnival. We stayed in Rickenbach hosted by some wonderful families who invited us into their home. Dani and Marlene played in Guggemusik Auckland but have since returned to Switzerland. Them along with members of Eveline’s family worked together to arrange an amazing trip. Carnival is a special time in Switzerland where drinking, music and socializing become the main focus for a week!
Many bands play in parades and their own celebrations. We joined in the main Lucerne parade which was incredible. To see so many supporters, and other bands in one place was astounding. Dani and Marlene organized a number of events for us to be part of or just enjoy. A memorable night was in Hildersreiden where a number of bands played on stage one after the other. While we were enoying drinks and food Dani and Marlene turned up with Bill and John’s Sousaphones. Next thing we saw (and we will call it the march of the sousaphones) all the sousaphones from all bands began marching to the stage. On stage at one time, there were 22 sousaphones all playing the same tune, Bill and John were nearly beside themselves with excitement.
The entire week was a mass of excitement, we went up Sorenberg ski field to see amazing views – doing this of course in costume with instruments so we could play at the top of an amazing snow capped mountain!
There are so many people who made our trip memorable, and we were absolutely touched when presented with a cheque of money raised by people in Switzerland to help with our costs. Therefore it is right that here we thank people who made a trip of a life time possible. The team in New Zealand: Eveline, Bill, Tom, Carole, Julia. The team in Switzerland: Dani and Marlene, Sue and Toni, Urban and Conny, Tilda, Michael and Andre, Lisbeth and Walter, Lea, Jacqueline and Jorg, Karen and Dani, Marie-Theres, Irma and Hans, Trudi and Andre and not forgetting Hendrix, Eveline’s Mum and Dad and Caleb (John and Brenda’s son). To all the sponsors that made the Guggemusik Band Auckland feel welcome loved and part of your family we thank you.
